The College of Creative Studies (CCS) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) is pleased to announce Dr. Ronald D. Vale ‘80 (CCS Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry) as the 2026 CCS Commencement Speaker. Vale is a world-renowned cell biologist and discoverer of the motor protein kinesin, a tiny machine that moves materials within cells along microscopic tracks. Disruptions in this process have been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

Vale became the first in his family to graduate from college upon earning his two degrees from CCS in 1980, and went on to receive his Ph.D. in neurosciences from Stanford University in 1985. He later served as a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco and as Executive Director of the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

“When I was a senior in high school, I turned down a full scholarship at Stanford so that I could attend the College of Creative Studies, UCSB. I still think that this was a very wise decision.”

—Dr. Ronald D. Vale ‘80 (CCS Biology)

A firm believer in the value of curiosity-driven research, Vale also maintains that breakthroughs with societal impact require a deep understanding of both the fundamentals and the details of a subject. This notion has guided his own work as a professor at the Whitehead Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where his research encompasses everything from how cells organize themselves to how organisms adapt to harsh environmental conditions.

As an entrepreneur, Vale co-founded the biotech companies Cytokinetics and Create Medicines, which bring foundational research discoveries from textbooks to real-world settings through innovative medicines and therapeutic applications.

Beyond contributing to the scientific community with his own research, much of Vale’s work revolves around making knowledge accessible to the broader public. He founded sites such as iBiology, The Explorer’s Guide to Biology, and Beautiful Biology, which offer free biology lectures from leading scientists, interactive imagery, and unique learning resources. Also, Vale has worked to strengthen communication networks connecting emerging researchers through organizations such as ASAPbio, IndiaBioscience as well as the annual Young Investigator Meeting

Vale’s many accolades include the Canada Gairdner International Award, the Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, and the Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the Royal Society as a foreign member.

Vale’s commencement address will be live streamed along with the rest of the ceremony. More information will be posted here.
