Looking to overcome the blank page? Struggling with writer's block? Here, we will take a formalized journey into the basics of algorithmic composition, using Max/MSP as a tool to aid the artist and engineer alike. We will be exploring how simple algorithmic models (fractal geometry, statistics, graphical interpolation, etc.) can provide intriguing sonic results across all genres (video game music, EDM, noise music, installations, and more). These methods are not only useful for schematic problem solving but can also be good for expanding musical and creative thinking. The ultimate goal is that students develop their best work over the quarter into a short, final composition.
A background in music and/or computer science is helpful, however, no specific experience is required. Students of various disciplines are welcome and should contact the instructor with any questions (email@example.com). Though there is no textbook, students will be using the software Max/MSP. It is free for the first month, then $9.99 per month after that free trial.
