Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of literary criticism, history, theory, and biography, addressing questions of the purpose of literary study, what can be known and proven about literature, and how the field works. A short (five-page) and a longer (ten- to fifteen-page) project will give students the opportunity to develop their skills in engaging in discourse in the field.
