ALGORITHMIC COMPOSITION WITH MAX/MSP

Course Description

Looking to overcome the blank page? Struggling with writer's block? Join us on a formalized journey into the basics of algorithmic composition, using Max/MSP as a tool to aid both artists and engineers. We will explore how simple algorithmic models—such as fractal geometry, statistics, and graphical interpolation—can yield intriguing sonic results across various genres, including video game music, EDM, noise music, installations, and more. These methods are not only useful for schematic problem-solving but can also expand musical and creative thinking. The ultimate goal is for students to develop their best work over the quarter into a short final composition.

While a background in music and/or computer science is helpful, no specific experience is required. Students from various disciplines are welcome and should contact the instructor with any questions (aawatts@ucsb.edu). Although there is no textbook, students will be using the software Max/MSP, which is free for the first month and costs $9.99 per month after the trial period.

The Winter 2025 edition of Algorithmic Composition with Max/MSP will offer hybrid instruction, with a combination of online, in-person, and blended meetings.
