INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING

Course Description

The purpose of W&L CS 10: Introduction to Creative Writing is to introduce students to the craft of creative writing. In part, that means learning the conventions of some of the major genres of creative writing, such as fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and scriptwriting. We will consider writing in scene, characterization, dialogue, setting, telling details, point-of-view, plot, style, meter, etc. by both reading numerous examples by contemporary writers and also writing short works almost every day.
Perhaps more importantly, students will have an opportunity to develop the habits of mind and practice that are essential for all writers. Students will learn how to read like a writer (with an eye not only toward content, but for qualities of form and language) and make reading an active part of their writing practice. Students will also engage in the writing process, exploring how to make the most of drafting, giving and receiving feedback, and revising.
