This is a theoretical, critical, and practical course in print, taught collaboratively by Patricia Fumerton, Department of English, and Harry Reese, Department of Art and Co-Director of Book Arts, CCS. It moves from a short theory and history of print to focus on the practical making of print, from papermaking, to engaging with different typefaces, and setting and printing type. In the second half of the course, students will print a page or selections from an author or genre that is of special interest to their field of study and write a critical paper (6-8 pp.) about how their experience in making their printed artifact produces and interacts with interpretation of the author/field they focused on. All students will also participate in a final and critique and display of their research and creative work.
