Structured as a collaborative, creative research group, the course will explore the form, design, and development of artists' books and printed multiples. Our conceptual anchor will be the UCSB Reads book, Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore by Elizabeth Rush and this will be supplemented by other texts exploring water. Students will use letterpress printing to create individual and collaborative artist’s books on concepts related to water. Handset type and advanced techniques like polymer plates will be covered as well as several binding structures.
Students should expect to spend time outside of class developing project ideas, reading, printing, and binding. Preference will be given to students who have prior experience with letterpress printing and bookmaking.
