This historically oriented seminar does not pretend to be a comprehensive survey of American Classical Music. Time is too short to do justice to the richness of music in America, even limited to the classical (rather than vernacular) tradition. Instead, we will focus our attention on a series of critical points in that history. Activities in the class may include discussion of assigned reading, group research, lightning presentations and a final paper, to be read during the final exam period for the class. CCS Music Composition majors earning a minimum of 3 units in the course may count it as one of their required music history courses.
