In this course, we will survey string quartet repertory from Haydn to the present. Within this context, we will consider the very nature of the genre and the way it has evolved (or not) since the classical period, as well as examining the quartet in the context of the social history of music. The perspective of this course is historical and conceptual; it is not a course for learning to compose for the string quartet, other than what students may glean through a thorough examination of the repertory. CCS music students who earn a minimum of 3 units in the course may count this course toward their Music History requirement. Students will be evaluated on the basis of listening exams, a demonstration of understanding via short answer quizzes, and regular attendance/participation.
