This class will illuminate an alternative history of abstract painting through the lives and techniques of painters who have been largely overlooked by the art history canon. We will approach many aspects of abstraction, but not all of them - and students will do research on their own about other abstractionists. Students will develop their own style and interests throughout the quarter, noting their inspirations, techniques, likes/dislikes, etc. in journals. This class will be largely self-directed; it is a chance for students to develop what they are interested in painting and how they approach painting in general.
