Course Description

This course has a $60 fee that will be charged the day after the Add Deadline for this quarter. Once the fee is assessed, it will not be refunded for any reason.

In this course, we will explore the concept of the Fictive Body within sculpture. Our exploration will include narrative forms of sculpture, drawing from its historical origins and expanding into contemporary contexts. We will utilize fiction and personal mythologies to experiment with the potential of sculpture as an archival medium. Centering on critiques and independent studio activities, students will engage with sculpture-related readings, interact with practicing artists in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, and examine how viewers navigate and interpret the spatial aspects of the art form. Students are expected to build upon their existing artistic practices, considering spatial elements in the creation of a new work intended for a final group exhibition in the CCS Gallery. The recommendation for this course is to have an already existing foundation in sculpture or an open mind in exploring contemporary installation methods in art making.
