Course Description

This course has a $50 fee that will be charged the day after the Add Deadline for this quarter. Once the fee is assessed, it will not be refunded for any reason.

The Alternative Abstract illuminates an alternative history of abstract painting through the lives and techniques of painters who have been largely overlooked by the art history canon. The course approaches many aspects of abstraction, and students will do research on their own about abstract movements, styles, and artists. Students will develop their own style and interests throughout the quarter, noting inspirations, techniques, likes/dislikes, etc in a course sketchbook. The course is largely self-directed, and is a chance for students to develop what they are interested in painting and how they approach painting in general. Students will need to have taken other painting courses as a pre-requisite, and should expect to spend a significant dedicated amount of time outside class on the work for this course. The final project will include a written element.
