Course Description

This course has a $60 fee that will be assessed on the day after the Add Deadline for this quarter. Once the fee is assessed, it will not be refunded for any reason

This course introduces students to critical fabulation, a method developed by Saidiya Hartman that combines historical research with creative narrative. The course will guide students step-by-step through the process of transforming historical materials into visual and narrative forms. Through readings, discussions, research labs, and critique, students will learn to treat research as a creative act, and imagination as a rigorous intellectual practice. By the end of the course, each student will produce an original artwork and an accompanying narrative grounded in historical knowledge. This course invites students to approach the archive not as an authority, but as a site of questioning, where research, storytelling, and artistic practice intersect.
