STUDENT-LED COLLOQUIUM: THE POLITICS OF SUPPORT IN CONTEMPORARY ART

Course Description

This seminar examines the final exhibition display of art objects through a close critical look at how frames of two-dimensional works and pedestals that support sculptural objects shape the experience of viewing art. These elements are often treated as neutral, yet they actively construct meaning, separating art from everyday life, reinforcing authority, inviting intimacy, or dissolving boundaries between the artwork and the viewer.

Through readings, discussion, short writing exercises, and in-class experiments, students will examine how artists historically used support structures and how contemporary artists strategically embrace, subvert, or reject them. The goal of the course is to develop an intentional understanding of why we do or do not use support systems, and what those choices communicate to an audience.

Open to students working in all media, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and interdisciplinary practices.
