Course Description

A half-history, half-studio abstract painting course that offers an alternative narrative to the typically cis-white-male-dominated histories of Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, Geometric Abstraction, etc. Curriculum includes the life, work, and techniques of artists such as: Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Bradford, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Krasner, Howardena Pindell, Hilma af Klint. Students keep an in-depth journal/sketchbook of their concepts, ideas, and progress throughout the quarter.
