Course Description

This course will explore visual composition through weekly projects investigating the individual elements of visual composition and the principles of design from imagination, memory, life, and abstraction using various media especially ink, charcoal, watercolor, oil. This is a course about composing anything within the visual language regardless of the media, gaining more power to more forcefully plan and express your ideas, while also developing your personal creative voice. Students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of visual composition across various visual disciplines including painting, drawing, film, photography, sculpture, installation, textiles, printmaking, and book design. Historical and contemporary designs will also be analyzing, studied, and interpreted in order to more deeply understand the language of visual composing along with the many strategies and devices that can be employed. Through visual experience-based projects students will learn an introduction to the foundation of visual composition and design and gain more creative composition power. This course will culminate in a personal final composition project.
