Zines: self-published | non-commercial | printed in small numbers | circulated through specific networks | targeting niche audiences | vehicles for ideas, expression, and art | building connections | disseminating information.
Zines are a highly democratic form of publication that explores issues in a low-tech format. Desk top printers, photocopy machines, as well as a range of hand-craft methods are used to create publications that can be widely shared. Whether the artist wants to explore quirky moments in their daily personal life, or issues shaping the social, cultural, or political realms, the zine is medium for the message.
Students will explore the history of what is considered a zine, and then explore what might be the history of that history, and then create zine editions of their own.
