Course Description

With the focus on text for its visual capacity, students will develop an independent project in the medium of their choice.

Words and images co-exist in art, books, signage, advertisement and more. By exclusively exploring text as a visual expression that appeals to the senses as well as the intellect, we will push the “language of text” towards unexpected material and visual possibilities. At the heart of the textual, material, tangle, and trace of words, will be the question of how text can become a primarily visual form in art.

In the first part of the quarter, we will explore typographic strategies, working by hand, drawing letterforms, in various styles, weights, arrangements and more. Then students will begin the development of their own projects during the next section of the quarter,

The instructor will provide a list of specific materials for use in the first half of the class.
You must write the instructor for an approval code.
