TACTILE NARRATIVES

Course Description

In this upper division studio course (2-4 units P/NP) students will explore artists who transmute and challenge the world around them through textiles. Over 10 weeks we will go over methods like binding, dyeing, weaving, quilting, hand application and printing that will result in a final narrative quilt and textile process binder. Alongside these techniques we will be learning from art theorists, crafters and artists on the ethics, history and the future of textiles. We will look at work by Jeffrey Gibson, Nick Cave, Carolyn Mazloomi, Billie Zangewa, Barbara Chase Riboud and Hiromi Tango who have used textiles to inquire their environments and create spaces and objects of healing, subversion and transformation. As students dive into these processes, we will work towards seeing the final quilt as not just a rectangle but a space of unlimited storytelling. Open to all ccs students and art majors, if you are interested in taking this course a code is required.
