INSTALLATION ART: PORTALS TO OTHER WORLDS

Course Description

In this studio art course, students will delve into the topic of Installation Art, an expansive realm of spatial studies rooted in site-specificity, immersive multi-sensory environments, contextual practice, and imaginative world-building. With an interdisciplinary ethos, we will explore a range of media through group workshops and self-directed experimentation, including but not limited to: mold-making, inflatables, soft sculpture, wood, metal, video projection, light, digital fabrication, extended reality, and performance activation. Students will explore scale models, material studies, a range of sculptural techniques, and self-directed projects culminating in immersive site-responsive installations. We will examine a range of Contemporary Installation Art practices including James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Noah Purifoy, Alex Da Corte, Sarah Sze, Guadalupe Maravilla, Jonah Freeman + Justin Lowe, Lauren Halsey, Chiharu Shiota, Mike Kelley, and Andrea Zittel, among many others. The course will touch on interrelated concepts of Land Art, Happenings, Light and Space, and New Media, and important spaces such as the Mattress Factory, MASS MoCA, and Dia.
