The 2018 CCS TV Musical, “SHAKE ON IT,” is airing digitally now after it was presented live to enthusiastic houses in April

Shake On It

In its two acts and roughly 100 minutes, “SHAKE ON IT,” an original musical by writers and composers within UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies (CCS), tells the story of Amanda Steinberg, a perfectly ordinary girl whom we first see decried as...well...BORING. After an unusual encounter with a card-shark named Vance, she acquires new powers to steal any and all admirable traits with just a handshake, and seeing the results, sets off on a tear to shake the hands of all the best and brightest at Jefferson High School. That is, until it all becomes overwhelming and her fractured personality goes into full revolt. How will she be redeemed in the end? A sleazy spiritualist may help...but have we not then seen him somewhere before?

The production stars Molly Clementz, graduate vocal major in UCSB's Music Department, in a role created especially for her. The remainder of the cast, which was recruited openly from UCSB's diverse student body, brought to life a brand-new stage property, authored by students under the roof of CCS.

This four-camera HD production, captured at the end of the staged run, also takes full advantage of theatrical-style editing. It is the sixth such effort made by the College of Creative Studies, UCSB, since 2004. Jeremy Haladyna is Executive Producer and Music Director, with Stage Direction by Gerry Hansen and Technical Direction by Emily Baker.

Given the limited seating for the original April run, here now is the perfect opportunity to relish Clementz in this starring role, after her triumphant recent review in Opera News.
