CCS Computer Scientist Earns Google Lime Scholarship
The College of Creative Studies congratulates Dana Nguyen, third-year CCS Computer Scientist, on receiving a 2018 Google Lime Scholarship. The Google Lime Scholarship supports Computer Science or Computer Engineering students with disabilities in the United States and Canada who exemplify leadership and exhibit a commitment to Computer Science and technology.
“I was very excited when I got the scholarship,” said Nguyen. “I felt grateful to my research advisor Professor Belding for supporting me, and thankful to Google for giving me this opportunity. I just couldn’t stop saying ‘thank you.’”
Nguyen’s computing interests lie in explaining real-world problems by analyzing influences in networks, particularly those of social networks, and using tools to identify user attributes and visualize cascading and persuasive behaviors associated with having an online presence. She is currently analyzing how specific organizations promote hate speech on social media with her graduate mentor, Mai ElSherief, in Professor Elizabeth Belding’s MOMENT lab.
Nguyen, who intends on pursuing a Master’s degree through the CCS Computing’s BS/MS program, indicated that this scholarship demonstrated to her that she was on the right path. “This is the biggest thing I have ever won,” said Nguyen. “Getting this scholarship reassured me that I am doing something right.”
