Course Description

The basics of letterpress printing will be covered, giving emphasis to traditional and experimental methods for using handset metal and wooden type. Additional print options will be presented. The course will emphasize both the technical and aesthetic aspects of letterpress printing. This will include setting type and printing using the letterpress. Importance will be given to the text and image page as a two-dimensional art form. Students will create a limited edition artists’ book, in which the 2 dimensional page is activated in the 3 dimensional book form.

Class and lab attendance are required. Students must plan to devote considerable time outside of class in addition to the class and lab meetings. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome in the course and may develop their own print projects.

Students must write instructor for an approval code.
