𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒗𝒂𝒔 explores the intersection of painting and ceramics through a collection of works that turn traditional ceramic forms into dynamic, three-dimensional canvases. By combining elements of sculpture and painting, the exhibition questions what a canvas can be and invites viewers to see form and function in a new way.

Ceramics bring an unpredictability to the process. Kiln temperatures, glaze reactions, and atmospheric shifts all play a role in shaping the outcome. Instead of trying to control every detail, I have learned to welcome that uncertainty and let the material lead at times. Each piece becomes a conversation between planning and spontaneity.

Alongside these new ceramic works, the show also includes earlier paintings from my time at the College of Creative Studies. Together, the pieces reflect how my practice has shifted from trying to capture realism on traditional canvases to experimenting with how painting can live on and interact with different materials.

Gallery Hours: Weekend hours by appointment only, through emailing: emilygorberg@ucsb.edu, regular gallery hours Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm
