The artists behind Manzanita honed their artistic skills and practices at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies. Inspired by Santa Barbara’s local manzanita species and its biological growth from germination often caused by wildfires, these emerging artists prepare to enter a new era of rebirth and artistic growth as their senior year as undergraduates comes to a close. With a diverse presentation of painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography, these artworks not only portray portraits of singular subjects, but also serve as a mirror of these students as artists themselves. Manzanita is the bitter end to the cycle of more insular life as art students and the sweet beginning of uniting and beginning the new journey of growth as professional artists in the world.
Special thanks to DMST Atelier, UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies, & Art Faculty Kim Garcia for the support in making this exhibition possible.
DMST Atelier is an artist-run studio, gallery, and social-practice space that supports the community in practicing alternative cultural currency. Not only does the space host art exhibitions, but it is also known for its monthly community feeds, which serve 60-100 people, as well as interactive, participatory, and collaborative art projects that activate the streets of Los Angeles both inside and outside.
UC Santa Barbara’s College of Creative Studies Program in Art is for self-motivated students who are committed to careers in the visual arts. The portfolio-based application selects for students who are prepared for a curriculum that is focused on the practice of studio art and explores historical and contemporary concepts, methods, and movements in art. Each student works with a faculty advisor who oversees an individual course of study to support the creation of original work. The students develop a mature body of work during their residency with several exhibition opportunities, culminating in a solo exhibition in their senior year.
